| Abstract: So-called "real-world" metaphors have long been popular in user interface and Web design. This note considers the various forms of metaphor and their appropriate and inappropriate use. In addition to famous blunders, the ubiquitous "shopping cart" as commonly realized in e-commerce on the Web is weighed and found wanting. Persistent shopping carts that are always present with visible contents are described. | |
